Our Sell By Date

Our Sell By Date

No amount of money, resources, exercise or just plain old “good living” will alter the reality we all have a sell by date. The truth is simply this: Being human is a terminal condition which raises an eternal question, are we this body or something more? Living on the Spiritual Basis the answer is clear: We are Spiritual beings experiencing the human condition, not Human beings in search of the spiritual for the spark of consciousness unique to us is timeless, was never born and will never die; has always been and will always be.

We raise our consciousness through prayer, meditation and selfless service, in so doing we effect permanent change beyond the vagaries of the flesh, secular living and thinking. So our job, the only real task in this life, is too practice the Presence of God every day in every area, with everyone, to fully forgive all who have trespassed against us, holding fast to the truth we are not mere flesh but children of The Miraculous in every sense, our raised consciousness transcending the strictures of time, the only true measurement of our time here being: how much love did we give away, unconditionally.

Quarantining Morbid Reflection

Quarantining Morbid Reflection

You have probably heard the admonition “we reap as we sow” often, but what does reaping and sowing in our consciousness really mean? Simply: The things we dwell upon, think about, will be out pictured in our lives. We reap the harvest of self-centered fear, self-imposed limitation, lack and failure when we entertain thoughts of violence, “getting even”, resentment in all its guises or condemnation of anyone or anything for any reason “for who would so unwise as to drink from a cup of poison expecting it to harm another.” All these crops are the fodder of Morbid Reflection, and reflecting morbidly, as spiritual teachers throughout history have taught, is an impenetrable barrier to that which we truly desire: peace, freedom, true place, happiness, in a word, Serenity.

Fortunately, though not easy, the way out is simplicity itself. When we find ourselves drifting into morbid (negative) thinking we stop immediately and “quarantine” the trouble by refusing to consider it and invoke, through prayer, the Presence of God, substituting God for the trouble in our minds eye. By doing this consistently we break the habit of focusing on the trouble (sowing negativity) and replace it with the habit of recognizing God (sowing truth) where the trouble seems to be. By refocusing we reap peace of mind instead of fear, serenity over confusion. Remember, everything we consider becomes imbued with power in our life, for good or ill, so get out the mental caution tape and immediately tape off destructive thinking, quarantining it with prayer, placing it in God’s hands.

Halfhearted Half Measures

Halfhearted Half Measures

We have all “halfheartedly” went about things in our life. Now, in truth, when we embarked, we may have been full of commitment, eyes shiny with hoped for results, but then the fire waned and so did our pledge. No? Have any unfinished “projects” lying around the house, perhaps buried in the back of a closet or worse seemingly mocking you every time you walk by them? Exercise equipment serving as a clothes rack, perhaps hiding in the garage or a shelf full of dusty self-help/diet books? Perchance some diet food aging gracefully in the cupboard or freezer?

On the secular plane doing things half halfheartedly does carry a price and the results are evident all around us: poorly built homes have tenants, a meal prepared without interest eaten without joy or thanks given, work done with no real passion or commitment still draws a paycheck, at least for a while. Spiritually though, freedom from the bondage of self requires total commitment, halfhearted half measures resulting not only in our failure to demonstrate but instilling the false belief we tried but the universe didn’t deliver, believing we really are unworthy or God is just too busy with things more important than us, reflecting morbidly our constant companion.

Nonsense. NONSENSE. God is source, “Our Father” in every sense and our birthright is to be happy, joyous and free. We are His children, children of the Miraculous and all the gifts and blessings this relationship represents are ours for the asking but we must ask without reservation, standing firm in faith, consistent in our prayers, meditations and service for spiritually, halfhearted half measures truly only avail us lack and a sense of disconnect from that which is true and good: our place as part of the Great Creative Life Force.

The Truth of Trudging

The Truth of Trudging

Having made the decision to place our feet upon the path, embracing the Spiritual Basis of Living, we now know God is in fact and deed the only power and we are delighted. We have begun to feel His power flow through us, the true meaning of serenity has taken hold in our heart and peace of mind has become a regular companion. Our Great Hope and Desire becoming reality, to finally and forever be free of the selfish desires which have kept us in the bondage of self, to becoming realized in Spirit, accepting the gifts that are ours by right of our Divine heritage. Today we know the Omnipresence of God is working through us, guiding us without error to the undreamt-of tomorrow as we trudge together on the road of happy destiny. Amen.

Answering the Unasked

Answering the Unasked

The Lord’s Prayer suggests we can be led into temptation, which begs the question: Would God lead us into temptation? Having been taught and shown again and again that God is the giver of only good; God’s love for us greater than our love of our children, how could He? Since Living on the Spiritual Basis removes gray areas and contradictions from life, what does this clause really mean?

Living on the Spiritual Basis the temptations of lying, cheating, stealing, etc. have become obvious, the price paid if we transgress clear. Having demonstrated over these base temptations new temptations arise from spiritual pride. The natural desire is to bring the good news we have learned to those still suffering, a noble desire to be sure, but fraught with this new form of temptation. Write this upon your heart in capital letters: DO NOT ANSWER THE UNASKED QUESTIONS.

This is the temptation we are asking God in the Great Prayer to lead us away from. When speaking about spiritual principles we must ask ourselves if we are engaging in attraction or promotion. We will attract those who are ready to learn by our actions, our demonstration of Living on the Spiritual Basis. If we have to sell it, promote it; convince others they should want what we have, then there is something wrong with our spiritual house. Attraction is the true path; promotion opens the door to the temptations of self-glory, self-aggrandizement, a sense of superiority and infallibility, all aspects of spiritual pride. When we consider how many evils have been and are perpetrated by those promoting their beliefs to the extreme, the clause “lead us not into temptation” becomes crystal clear. We must remain ever diligent, and though it may break our heart to refrain, we never enter unbidden into someone’s spiritual house.
To be clear, the converse is true as well. When someone asks, we must be willing to stand and be counted in the face of any perceived earthly consequence, personal or otherwise, the temptation of self-centered fear denied. So whenever or wherever we are asked to share the Good News we must not shrink, for we have been put to the question and faith requires our answer.

Forgiveness In Practice

Forgiveness In Practice

So, how do we forgive? By praying, remembering the manner of prayer not nearly as important as its location of origin. Did the prayer come from our intellect primarily, because we see the payoff the Law of Forgiveness provides and wish to reap the benefits or from our heart because we truly desire freedom for ourselves and the offender?

Consider carefully, if we hold in our hearts even the slightest doubt the object of our resentment deserves forgiveness than our demonstration will be stunted. Take heart though since prayer will address this as well. The way of patience, tolerance, kindliness and love requires us to raise our consciousness, hoping others will choose this path of freedom, but our focus must be our demonstration, not the other man’s. Begin the process by finding a quiet place where you will not be disturbed, then take a few moments to quiet yourself. One method is to take three or four deep breaths with eyes closed, exhaling slowly. Having quieted yourself ask God to remove from you any “hidden” anger still residing in your heart toward the offender, then read or recite out loud any prayer which has significance to you. When finished quietly say out loud you now forgive the individual completely and pray every good thing you desire in life to come too theirs as well, and if there is anything God would have you do to be of service, you are willing. Finish with “May I do Thy will always. Amen.”

Do not under any pretense repeat this treatment. When we do, we repudiate the demonstration and short circuit our growth. To be clear: resentments are tenacious and will float into our consciousness again. When this happens immediately say a blessing for the “offender” and turn your thoughts to God. In time you will need to do this less and less. Finally, do not be afraid to offer yourself to be of service, for God will never place us in a position to be harmed if we are about His business, so if you are called to service something truly remarkable will come of it. By obeying the Law of Forgiveness, not only are we set free, but all whose lives we touch improve as well.

Resentments’ Itch

Resentments’ Itch

When we harbor a resentment we suffer, not the object of our ire and the truth is nurturing a resentment binds us to the object of our ire by a mental chain stronger than any steel! Holding on to a resentment is akin to having a physical wound which we never allow to heal. We “pick” at the resentment by reliving, retelling the story of hurt in graphic detail to any who will listen, even if we are only talking to ourselves! This manner of thinking is guaranteed to shut us off from the peace and serenity we crave; we must learn to turn away from our hurts and allow them to heal.

We achieve this by deciding finally and forever to forgive the cause of the resentment. By asking God to do for them everything good we wish to have happen in our life, visualizing them receiving God’s grace, His peace upon them, sets us free. We repeat this action without fail every time we get the “itch” to scratch it mentally. In time a scar will form to mark its passing, but resentments are tenacious, and our subconscious will whisper, “perhaps we should scratch at it again, just in case.” Do not react negatively when these thoughts surface, and they will, but do turn in prayer immediately and thank God for knowing Him better, that you and the author of the resentment are free. Do not for a moment rehash the memory of the hurt; focus only on seeing the Presence of God where the hurt was. Eventually this will become second nature and as with all things spiritual (and all life as well) while condemnation stunts growth, forgiveness promotes it.

Finally, forgiving someone who has harmed us does not mean we necessarily invite them back into our lives. Many lost in the bondage of self will be incapable of change, so release them with love and pray they find their way, always remembering that though we hope for the best, we are only responsible for our spiritual demonstration and we never place ourselves knowingly in position to be harmed.

Forgive For Our Sake

Forgive For Our Sake

Forgiveness is the key, to everything. Until we understand this, carve it into our heart, no real lasting progress can ever be made. When we think about it logically this makes perfect sense. Have you ever prayed and then wondered why you did not demonstrate? In order to fully demonstrate we must be free of self-condemnation and remorse, forgiving ourselves, which happens only after we have fully forgiven others, ridding ourselves of all resentment and condemnation toward them. Though repeated ad nauseum, this truth cannot be repeated enough: “simple but not easy, a price has to be paid. That price is the surrendering of self.” Search your heart, in the secret place of your consciousness is there any “justified” anger or an old resentment lurking you feel is warranted for any reason? If so, perform an act of forgiveness and mean it. If for any reason we cannot do this, by holding on to old hurts, real and imagined we are essentially raising a cup of poison to our lips, believing by drinking it we are punishing those we hate or resent. So, to be truly free, we must put down the cup and forgive, for our sake.

Justified Retribution

Justified Retribution

There is a part of me, and I’m pretty sure you have it too, that keeps score, chiming in with its own sense of justice. When someone does something unthinking or illegal while driving the thought pops up “where is a cop when you need one” or something bad happens to someone we think deserves it and “serves them right” or “they deserved that” crosses our mind. In the same vein occasionally we think we know what’s best and actually wish something bad (serves’em right dontcha know) to befall someone are all examples of self-centered thinking, thinking which ultimately retards our spiritual growth. It does not matter whether or not the offender rightly deserves to be punished, we can never engage in negative prayer or wishful negative thinking, for to do so invites resentment and morbid reflection to take up residence in our heart.

Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God’s will into all our activities, thy will, not mine be done.

It would be less than honest of me not to acknowledge that when I have been cut off or watched someone do something stupid behind the wheel only to see flashing lights appear, the voice in my mind (sometimes out loud) chimes in with “ALRIGHT”  and when bad things happen to bad people, forgiveness is not always my first thought. The wild justice of the carnal mind the Old Testament addresses is alive and well in most of us, certainly in me. So, just for today I will ask for God’s help to pray rightly, to pray the person driving selfishly arrives safely as well as all whose path they cross, to leave justice to God and ask to be shown the way of patience, tolerance, kindliness and love, staying out of the retribution business, remembering all are connected in Spirit, and there is a little bit of bad in the best of us and a little bit of good in the worst and it is no longer my job to measure it.

Complete Forgiveness

Complete Forgiveness

One of the keys of freedom in life is when we finally accept most of our troubles are rooted in selfish deceitfulness, born of the thinking we can show the world one face while hiding our true feelings and motives. This error compounded if we believe our thoughts are somehow separate from God, that the Miraculous does not know what we are thinking and feeling. Considering the truth about the Presence of God: that He is immanent, permanently pervading and sustaining all the universe; this type of thinking is weak at best and downright delusional at its worst. The natural outcome of this spurious belief is to shut us off from the sunlight of the spirit as surely as burying our head in the sand cuts us off from sunlight and air.

When this realization hit me years ago it sent me into a tail spin. All the secret thoughts I believed I had so neatly hidden from God, in truth had been always open to Him. As the significance of this rolled over me I found myself on my knees, asking God to remove from me my illusions there is anything about me He does not know or is separate from Him.

This marked the point in my life when “forgive us our trespasses” from the Lord’s Prayer became truly known to me, becoming a working part of my life. I began to accept His forgiveness that day and the process of understanding how important it is to truly and completely forgive others began in earnest and though this happened many years ago, the lesson is as fresh today as then.
