Memorial Day

Memorial Day

“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived.” General George S. Patton.   Honoring those who sacrificed themselves so others may breathe free is a sacred duty, however mourning to excess is destructive. Many have stopped living themselves when a loved one has passed, literally hoping for their own end so they can “join” with them on the “other side.” When we have committed ourselves to living on the Spiritual Basis, death and all suffering come into true focus for, Nothing truly dies. To be clear: the flesh will fail for this is the nature of flesh, but the spark of the Divine; the ineffable power at the heart of everything that stands outside of time and our synthetic understanding of the universe, the I AM, was never born and can never die. So we mourn those who have passed beyond our limited sight by celebrating their life, this lesson learned, comforted in the knowledge of their translation from flesh back to true self, unbound and unencumbered by physical limitations and let them go in Love, for Love is the connection that transcends all earthly limitations and lies at the Heart of all that is true and just.

Our Deadly Attachments

Our Deadly Attachments

Have you inventoried the things in your life you are “attached” to? We all have them and until we identify them and understand their roots they often act as invisible anchors, slowing our spiritual progress. Does this mean we have to strip away and discard all we own (physically and mentally) to grow spiritually? No, but we must discard our attachments, mental and physical. Possessions are not a spiritual hindrance unless we define ourselves by them. We are not the house we live in or derive any real status (positive or negative) from its physical location. We are not the car we drive, wristwatch we wear or any other material possession for these things are all passing, mere ornaments of living, gifts to enjoy but of little spiritual value, destructive if they lull us into a false sense of perceived spiritual entitlement because we “own” them.

As hindering material attachments, possessions, may be, they pale in significance when weighed against our mental attachments, the possessive thoughts we routinely embrace, particularly those kept in our secret “closet of heart and mind” which plant the deepest and heaviest anchors. To hold that any group or people are either favored by God or despised, plants an anchor. To place anyone or anything on a pedestal, a sacred cow, another anchor. To fail to recognize the inherent dignity of anyone, for ANY reason, another anchor, wishing violence on anyone, there are many more. We are spiritual beings, the power that is within us, moves us is beyond measure; it is no less than the Creative Life Force that animates the mayfly and powers the stars. As great as this power is, we can set enough anchors to slow our growth to the point of it being imperceptible. We must begin cutting away the anchors slowing our progress, for if we don’t, our fate will be the same as the Rich Young Man from the Bible, who failed to demonstrate and …went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions (Matthew 19:22)

To Set Aside

To Set Aside

One of the most misunderstood passages in the Sermon on the Mount is “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). Now we all have known or know those who are “poor spirited” and blessed usually isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, when considering this passage, it is difficult not to think of those times when we have felt poor spirited; somewhat perplexing to the notion that if this is what “blessed” feels like, I think I will pass. The “poor in spirit” The Great Carpenter refers too in the Sermon has nothing to do with being poor spirited. The meaning of “poor in spirit” used here means we have let go of our preconceptions, our fear, and self-will.

There is a prayer known as the set-aside or lay-aside prayer that speaks to this state of consciousness. There are several variations, this is one of the simplest: Dear God, please help me to set aside everything I think I know about you and this world, so I may have an open mind and a new experience. Please help me to see the Truth, Amen.

This prayer shows us how to surrender to win, setting aside our preconceived ideas and sacred cows, laying aside fear. When we achieve this raised state of consciousness, remaining open minded and willing to learn, to change and honestly address our defects as well as our assets of character in their proper light, we have truly become “poor in spirit” and the Kingdom of Heaven is ours, right here, right now.

Removing Our Discomfort

Removing Our Discomfort

All are equal in God’s eyes, what determines our peace of heart and mind is how we practice the within, without. When our actions run contrary to the truth we have come to know and embrace, to believe in the word but fail to live by the word leads to our suffering. When we fail to stand for what’s in our Heart, the truth as we have come to know it, we reap spiritual unease. Our fear of possibly offending someone or being perceived as some kind of “Holy Roller” is typically at the heart of it. But this discomfort is always self-inflicted, a reminder of Fear’s power in our lives, for in fact, truth is what sets us free. So, just for today, by His Love and guidance, choose to stand for the truth, serve it up with tact and joy, never attacking or belittling another and if we find they are not receptive, we leave them with a silent prayer of peace and a blessing, standing ready to be of service, if asked. And in those times when we have feet of clay, for it happens to all of us, His Love, guidance and unconditional forgiveness will set our feet back on the path, removing our discomfort, for we are all truly blessed, loved beyond measure.

Prayer for Casting Out Fear

A Prayer for Casting Out Fear

Casting out our fear is at the heart of Living on the Spiritual Basis. Having learned and embraced the truth that God is the only real power, and God is Love, the one true source; our Spirit, the Spark of the Divine within having always been, our true self immortal, the truth now evident that we are spiritual beings experiencing the human condition, not limited humans in search of the Divine. We have come to realize time and material possessions are illusions, often burdening us with fear, leading us in turn to desperation as we lose focus of the truth and drift into morbid reflection. When this happens, I have employed a version of this prayer for many years with good effect, perhaps it will assist you but remember, the wording is not nearly as important as the origin, our Heart of Hearts:

I cast the Fears that weigh on my heart into My Father’s hands and See His Presence in every area of my life, bathing me in His Divine Love, removing the Fear constricting my Heart and I Am at peace. Amen.

Practicing the Yoga Of Love

The converse of Love is fear and fear is the mind killer, the destroyer of souls, the true death. Anger, spite, condemnation, resentment, ill will, all such things are just so many alternate expressions of fear, all constrictions upon the free flow of Life, is it any wonder the world is filled with hatred, sickness, and death? —that we grow old, and tired, and worn?—that the earth is desolated by wars, famine, and pestilence? Until we build up within our own soul a real and practical Love-consciousness, our other activities will be futile. When we truly embrace the Love-consciousness sufficiently, allowing for no exceptions, everything else will follow.

The Pathway of Love is open to everyone in all circumstances, and upon which we may step at any moment—at this moment if you like—requires no formal introduction, has no entrance examination. It calls for no expensive laboratory in which to work, because your own daily life and your ordinary daily surroundings and activities are your laboratory.

The ONLY requirement to begin is to steadfastly expel from our mentality every thought of condemnation (to be clear: we must condemn wrong action, but never the actor), of resentment, and of everything which is contrary to the law of Love. We must not allow ourselves to hate—for any reason: any person, group, or nation for when we do, we are living in fear, not Love.

We must build up by faithful daily exercise a true Love-consciousness, upon which all the rest of our spiritual development will follow. Love will heal you. Love will comfort you. Love will guide you. Love will illumine you. Love will redeem us from fear, sickness, even death, and lead us into the promised land, the place that is altogether lovely. By choosing to follow the road less traveled, the path of Love, since all are truly connected in Spirit, not only do we raise our consciousness, but the whole world as well. So, our mantra needs to be: Let there be change, let there be Love, and let it begin with me.

This is the Yoga of Love.

Dragons

Dragons

On ancient maps when the cartographer reached the end of what was known they would often write in the margin “There Be Dragons” to denote the unknown beyond the edges of the known, fear inculcated as fact, since they had probably never actually seen a dragon. Being a metaphysician, I find that margin note quite appropriate when embarking on any attempt to teach spiritual truth and principles. So many desire peace of heart and mind but remain tremulous in their seeking, fearing what lies ahead in their journey, whether that be what they may find within or how they will be viewed by others. The path of true enlightenment requires us to remain open to all teachers and teachings; the mistake is when we make any of them “sacred cows”, placed on metaphysical pedestals, beyond question or error.

“We have to continue to learn. We have to be open. And we have to be ready to release our knowledge in order to come to a higher understanding of reality.” Thich Nhat Hanh

Remaining open to new ways of thinking and seeing the world around us is the road of enlightenment, but since we are constantly breaking new Spiritual ground the specter of “Dragons” is real. The carnal mind knows what it likes and most importantly is comfortable with and will attempt to fill us with fear and trepidation, Dragons, which will stifle our spiritual expansion. All that is required to become enlightened is consistency and an open mind and heart, coupled with the willingness to serve a greater destiny than our limited (carnal) imaginations can conceive. So, listen to opposing viewpoints and engage in constructive dialog where appropriate (be very wary of Dragons here and never argue with a closed, dogmatic mind) filtering everything through your evolving Spiritual Truthand understanding and never be afraid to share your beliefs and truth tactfully through the prism of love, Dragons be damned.

Illness Guaranteed

Illness Guaranteed

Extreme emotion is your friend. Get overly emotional about everything. Be outraged not only at perceived slights directed at you but at anyone else as well, even strangers.
Drink lots of caffeine and energy drinks. So what if it makes it hard to sleep. Sleep and rest are overrated anyway. Besides you’ll get plenty of sleep when your dead.

Eat anything that is quick and easy. Food is food and time is precious. What is more important, eating or working, texting, blogging, chatting, reality TV, online poker, partying etc.? The body may be a temple, but it is your temple so decorate it anyway you want.

Vitamins and supplements are expensive, and some say they really don’t work anyway, so they must be a waste of money.

Stay busy. Even when “relaxing” do something you deem constructive, like texting, chatting, Facebook, etc. God forbid you take any real down time.

Avoid prayer and meditation, religiously.

Never walk if you can ride.

You will always have time to exercise later, when you have more time.

When you do get sick, make sure you research the condition at length. Speak of your malady with everyone (make sure you rehearse your speech, don’t want to leave anything out) and then listen intently when they in turn share their experiences, especially the negative ones to see how they may apply to you.

And never, ever, turn to The Miraculous in anything.

How To Succeed At Failure

How To Succeed At Failure

Embrace sanctimony. Pride yourself on being the perpetual devil’s advocate; always pointing out why something will never work, reveling in the potential pitfalls. Be sure to inject yourself into every conversation, whether invited or not, because you are providing an invaluable service. Develop your genius for predicting the worst at every turn. Have no real focus in life. Spend your time gossiping whether in person or by endless blogging and texting about meaningless things, never missing an opportunity to point out the negative. Check your social media faithfully, wherever you are, driving, at work, etc. because your attention and comments are needed. Watch reality TV religiously and become emotionally involved with the fabricated narrative. Trust in blind luck, every failure affirming the belief that life really is a crap shoot, and you are just unlucky. Always think of yourself first and never be of service to anyone unless there is something in it for you, and never step out in faith, trust only in yourself because all those people who live by Spiritual Principles are deluded fools and losers and you have the perfect recipe for failure.

The Recipe for Unhappiness

The Recipe for Unhappiness

Reflect morbidly. Worry about everything. Tell yourself that time is running out and you aren’t getting any younger. Rehash the memories of all those times you zigged when you should have zagged. Visualize all the people who have ever mistreated you and relive the experience. Worry about your health. Go online and search medical databases to diagnose any ache or pain you have and what it might be a symptom of. Money? Have some? Will it be enough, will it last, what if some crook in a suit finds a way to steal it? Don’t have much? How will you get more? What if you don’t? Whatever your financial condition, dwell on all the possible negative outcomes. In short, relentlessly focus on the negative. And above all, do not let any thoughts of God or good dissuade you from your mission and you are quite sure to be successful at being unhappy.
